DEBATE: Is the scene going thru a transformation?

Postby strickly on Fri May 02, 2008 1:08 pm

Back in the day, in the 70's and 80's the scene suffered from a lot of transformation. Clubs like Paradise Garage marked a point break in time directing things in a new way. A specific group of people in particular locations were part of that all being the protagonists of big times where not only the music but more the scene defined genres, lifestyles and new ways of thinking.
Nowadays and for some time already, it seems (to me) or it simply comes to (my) mind, that the scene isn't going under big changes and that there's no specific city or area that would be defining how things are and what way things should follow. You can go to Chicago, you can go to New York City, also Miami in the states. Toronto in Canada as well as the Uk, South Africa, Greece, Spain among many others, but it seems that in none of these you will be living a scene that may be part of that line in time where the past and the future are getting together to mark a new era.
The community has become probably a worldwide phenomenon that crosses the boundaries of cities and countries with the help of the Internet, understandable like a digital scene. Information about upcoming events, new record releases and even the parts of an upcoming song flow in the Net among clubbers, promoters, producers and vocalists. We all together take part of the same movement making it maybe a bit the same and homogeneus. Just the music could be evolving while the scene stays the same. Or is it that both (have to) evolve together?
Another possibility is that the movement is suffering from changes but we as persons don't have the possibility of seeing that change until it becomes history for the ones to come in the future.
Am I just glorifying a past era and saying nothing remarkable is taking place right now? Well, maybe in terms of scene evolution but concerning the music itself few I like more than the one that surrounds the 2000's and forth.
What's your thought? :geek:

Hello, im George (G!), a house dj from Beirut, Lebanon (Crobar, Beirut). I must say that our scene is an emerging one, kind of like what was going on in Europe and North America in the 80's and 90's. We are a country on the Mediterranean Middle East, with an Arab population, but we are considered to be the Ibiza of the Middle East...its not just the bombs, we also party like crazy! :-)

Im lucky enough to be part of a newborn scene, pretty much pioneering thru from our underground afterparties to more recently CROBAR in Lebanon. The potential for our country is great, and soon enough it will be a main destination alongside Dubai for nightlife in the Middle East.

So yes, the scene is constantly going thru transformations, and like everything every transofmation has its good and bad aspects. Its basically up to us to harness all that energy and the keep the spirit of house alive and well.

Saludos desde Libano!
